Recent political banter...

Ayn Rand has had a pretty profound influence on my way of thinking. Once upon a time I tended to side with more liberal beliefs. Then I had an awakening. Things clicked in my mind. And capitalism and a free market made perfect sense. Anyway, politics are really interesting to me. I had a recent Facebook banter with some fellow left-wingers. What are everyone's thoughts on this recent news about Orrin Hatch trying to implement drug testing for those seeking to receive welfare checks? I thought it seemed like a novel idea in some aspects.

I actually think it would be a good thing...

I think it's a great idea. I don't know why we wouldn't. If people are going to be taking tax payers money then they need to show that they are honest enough to use the money responsibly. And prove that they actually NEED the money, not just for drugs.. Ugh...

Hey Ashley totally random I know but loved your post. I worked in the Medicaid system and saw so many abuse it. Not only do I think it would be a good idea, I think they should have to pay for the drug test either out of their own pocket or through some type of service rendered to the community that they live in since they obviously can't afford it. Welfare has become a form of occupation for some. While it's fairly apparent that not all of the people in this country are crack addicts and lazy, there are enough that are abusing the system that they ruin it for the other who truly need it. If you're not using drugs, why would you have a problem submitting to such testing? Some might give the absurd excuse that it invades privacy..give me a break..if I was at the point where food stamps was my option to be putting food on my kids table I would be licking toilet bowls clean for a job. Once again, My understanding of Welfare is that it is for someone who is in need of help for a time until they get back on their feet, not as a job for the next few years until so and so feels the need to "go back to work" Maybe I'm heartless.....

Couldn't agree more with you Chris! Thanks for the comment!! You should go read the diatribe on my FB about my post. Pretty interesting perspectives from both sides of the fence.

I totally agree. I got an email a while ago that talked about how ironic it is that you have to take a drug test before you are hired at many companies. Some of the money we then earn goes to support those on assistance. It only makes sense that they would have to take a drug test to receive that assistance. It doesn't seem that complicated to me. I'll have to read your facebook page and get in on the action, or at least become educated on the other side. You always have the most insightful posts!

Absolutely agree ash a leeey. I cannot begin to tell you how many individuals I see in the hospital that are getting the free ride for medical care that was brought on by their addictions whether it be alcohol or other drugs. I am all for it and they certainly should need to pay for the drug test. I am not trying to paint a completely negative picture, because I know that there are many individuals that do require government assistance because they got hit with some bad luck and by all means do deserve some assistance. xoxo i loved seeing you this past weekend.
